The Mauler’s modern HEKA** coil gun design is a popular choice for weapons technicians as they are a low and easy maintenance system. The weapon is not so popular amongst many experienced pilots as the weapon provides generally low armour and shield penetration on individual rounds. Counter to popular opinion some pilots have expressed a liking to the weapon’s high ammunition capacity and rapid fire providing acceptable damage when the target is kept under sustained fire. The weapon is also considered a ‘safe’ option when issued to learner pilots.

The LCG-236 Mauler proved to be workable but many pilots find the weapon lacking in damage output. MCG-159 attempted to improve on performance the weapon by expanding the chamber and barrel while increasing the peak energy flow through the coils to maintain muzzle velocity yielded a weapon with a marked improvement in performance. The down side is the weapons size category has increased to 1.1 limiting the ship it can be fitted to

The Rocker design started out as the LCG-236 Mauler, to try and address pilot feedback on the low damage capability of the Mauler the chamber, barrel and coil specifications were increased to take a larger calibre round. This resulted in the HMG-159 Ravager which out performed the Mauler by a good measure. The problem encountered was that the expansion pushed the weapon to a category 1.1 preventing its installation in many Category 1 mountings and severe reductions in ammo capacity in mountings that could take it. Pilots mounting the Ravager in Category 2 banks found the weapon badly underperforming compared to other weapons in Category 2. Trying once again to find a niche for the weapon, Lancer Arms tried to increase the rate of fire but couldn’t get the coils to reliably cycle fast enough to make a significant difference to rate of fire or projectile speed. Instead the engineers rebuilt the weapon to a rotating multi barrel design. The modifications gave rise to the LRCG-161 with increased the size to Category 1.5 and the rate of fire sufficiently to make it a viable weapon in Category 2 banks.
